柏林电影节银熊奖提名。<br>LaTerraza(1963)'TheTerrace'<br>ShockerFromArgentine:AttemptatSymbolismEndsinMelodrama,TorreNilssonDepictsYouthinRebellion<br>ByBOSLEYCROWTHER<br>Published:November25,1964<br>LEOPOLDOTORRENILSSON,thegreatArgentinenewwavefilmdirectorwhomadeanarresting,disconcertingpictureaboutanelusiveyounggold-diggerentitled"Summerskin,"hasnowcomeupwithanotherarresting,disconcertingpictureaboutagroupofwealthy,elusive,world-wearyyoungBuenosAiressybarites.Itiscalled"TheTerrace"anditopenedyesterdayattheTrans-Lux52dStreetandtheGlobe.IthadpreviouslybeenseenhereinoneperformanceattheNewYorkFilmFestivalin1963.<br>FollowingverymuchinthespiritofsuchmemorablefilmsaboutdecadentyouthasFedericoFellini's"IVitelloni"andClaudeChabrol's"LesCousins"and"LeBeauSerge,"ittakesalonglookatalow-keyorgyofrichyoungfellowsandfashionablegirlswhobarricadethemselvesfromtheirtroubledeldersontherecreationroofofaswankapartmenthouse.<br>There,insymbolicisolation,theylollinscantyswimsuitsbesidethepool,drinkbeer(laterswitchingtowhisky,whichisobliginglyfetchedforthembythe10-year-olddaughterofthesuperintendent,ahappyandenterprisingchild),makeloveindesultoryfashionandfinallyorganizethemselvessufficientlytoplayagamecalled"raft,"whichturnsouttobethemostunusualandexplanatoryactioninthefilm.<br>Inthisgame,alltheplayers,exceptone,lineupontheedgeofthepool.Thentheonewalksdowntheline,pausingbrieflyinfrontofeachplayer,decidingwhetherhe(orshe)shallbetheonewhoispermittedtoremain"ontheraft"withhim(orher).Thoseplayersnotwantedarepushedintothepoolafterbriefandcandidexplanationsofwhatisdisagreeableaboutthem.<br>Obviously,thisisawickedsortof"truthandconsequences"gameinwhichthejealousiesandresentments,aswellasthepreferences,oftheplayersarerevealed.Andintheplayingofitwearemadetoperceive,atleast,thesexualtastesandheroconceptsoftheforemostindividualsinthegroup.<br>Thisis,indeed,theshowdownofthepervertednaturesoftheseyoungfolks,complementingotherpassingintimationsoftheiranti-Semiticandfascistictendencies.TowardtheendtheirbravadoIsevidencedinanimpromptu"suicideroulette,"inwhichtheytaketurnsstandingontheparapetoftheroofandthreateningtoleap(orbepushedoffbyacompanion)iftheireldersbreakthroughtothem.<br>Andfinally,whentheeldersdoreachthem,duringadefectionintheirranks,themostarrogantofthefellowsgrabsthesmallchildandtossesherovertheparapet.<br>ItisclearthatMr.TorreNilssonandhiswriterandwife,BeatrizGuldo,offerthistaleasanallegoryoftheangryalienationofaclassofyoungpeopleintheworldtoday.Theiralienation,too,fromreligionisindicatedinonesceneinwhichapriesthoversovertheminahelicoptertryingtopersuadethemthroughabull-horntodesist.<br>Buttheweaknessandinadequacyofthedramaisthatitdoesnothingmorethandocumenttherebelliousnessoftheyoungpeople.Itdoesnotspecifywhy.Andthelittleweareshownoftheireldersrepresentsthemasmerehollowclichés.<br>Nothingiswrongwiththeperforming.LeonardioFavioistoughandbluntasthemostarrogantofthefellows,andGracielaBorgesistheniftiestofthegirls.Otheryoungactorsandactressesfriskandflauntthemselvesaggravatingly.AndaprecociouschildnamedBelitaisdelightfullynormalandcontemptuousofthelot,untilsheisthrownofftheparapetandleftattheendwithasymbolicallycrippledleg.<br>Photographically,Mr.TorreNilssonhasdoneacommendablejob,capturingthelookofBuenosAiresinahard,realisticstyleandhintingatthenaturesofhisyoungsterswithsignificantangleviewsofthem.Butthelackofpictorialequatingofthedefiantoneswiththatagainstwhichtheyrebelleavesthefilmamereroof-topmelodramaratherthanasocialstudywithalessontoimpart.
