PolishfilmmakerJerzyKawalerowiczwasonceconsideredoneofhiscountry'smosttalentedpost-WWIIdirectors,notedforhispowerful,detail-orientedimagery.Kawalerowiczwasversatileandhissubjectsrangedfromhistoricaldramastointensepsychologicalstudies.Hemadehisdirectorialdebutin1951afterworkingasanassistantdirector.In1955KawalerowiczwasappointedheadoftheprestigiousKADRproductionunit.Heheldthepositionagainin1972.In1983,Kawalerowiczalienatedhimselffrommanyofhispeersbysigningcommunistgovernment-generatedreportscondemningallfilmmakersalignedwiththeSolidarityMovementandpromotingthedestructionofproductionunitsrunbylongtimeassociatesWajdaandZanussi.
BorninGwozdziec,Poland(nowGvozdets,Ukraine),JerzyKawalerowiczwasnotedforhispowerful,detail-orientedimageryandthedepthofideasinhisfilms.Afterworkingasanassistantdirector,hemadehisdirectorialdebutwiththe1951filmTheVillageMill(Gromada).HewasaleadingfigureinthePolishFilmSchool,andhisfilmsShadow(Cien,1956)andNightTrain(Pociag,1959)constitutesomeofthatmovement'sbestwork.
